Our Story
All about us
Freddie and Eileen Smith started supplying turf and topsoil to local councils in 1963.  It wasn’t long before the business had Royal connections and was delivering to the London parks and Royal gardens.  The stopped supplying turf in 1979 to concentrate on specialised mixtures of soils which have become increasingly popular.

As their four children left school, Fred and Eileen decided it would be best for them to concentrate on their own careers before entering into the family business.

However, after several years Melanie, Warren, Glen and Arran decided they wanted to be more involved allowing their parents to retire.  Melanie now heads up the sales and marketing side of the business leaving Glen and Arran to undertake site visits and quotations.

Warren is in charge of transport and also works onsite.  It’s an exciting time for the business with the second generation of Smiths at the helm.

Sadly, Eileen passed away in January 2017 and has missed seeing the business go from strength to strength but the values on which the company were founded remain ensuring Smiths Top Soil is the number one company for all your gardening needs.

WHAT WE DO?

For any size garden throughout the seasons, we can supply you with the goodness and nutrients needed. For example, during the winter months we would suggest Top Dressing your lawn to bring levels up and repair tired lawns due to the extreme hot weather. We would also suggest using mulching and composting flower / vegetable beds to get ready for the Winter. All of our materials are supplied loose, ton bags and also 25kg bags.

| Screened Topsoil |

Our screened topsoil comes in various grades, so depending on what type you need for your garden, we have it covered. Our topsoil’s go through a screening plant which has different sized sieves, thus separating the soil particles from stones and providing you with a finer material to work with. This grade of soil is ideal to use for building up areas to grass seed and also topping up raised beds. This can be mixed with our rotted farm manure to make a great bedding mixture for your plants, flowers, fruit and vegetables providing them with some much need nutrients. Our Screened soil is available throughout the year as it is stored in one of our many barns.

|Garden Mulch|

Our Wood Mulch is perfect for applying to flowerbeds.  Not only does it add an attractive look it also helps with Soil reconditioning, moisture retention, fertilizing and as a weed suppressant.  When spreading the wood mulch we would advise that it should be at least 2-3 inches thick and all weeds should be removed beforehand.  Once spread and levelled be careful that the mulch does not come into direct contact with the stems of trees and specimen plants as this can cause the stems to soften and make them vulnerable to disease.  The perfect time to apply this is mid to late spring and the autumn this is when the soil is moist and warm, but please note, this process should be repeated yearly for your plants to really benefit.  Mulch can also be applied to cover the surface of compost in containers to help with the retention of moisture.

|Rotted Farm Manure|

Our well-rotted farm manure is locally sourced and is turned regularly to break it down which speeds up the rotting process. When using our manure on your flowerbeds, the nutrients are released thus enriching and conditioning the soil to help with healthy growth. The best way to apply our manure is to turn and loosen the soil then mix the manure in. Our manure can also be used a Mulch and by spreading the surfaces on your flowerbeds or vegetable patches this will then serve as a slow release fertilizer.

Our top dressing can be mixed to your requirements and is perfect for replenishing and reconditioning your lawn. Top dressing your lawn regularly has many benefits, it not only smooths your lawn surface but feeds and renovates the soil, helping to improve drainage. We also offer sterilized top dressing. This eliminates roots and seed and along with our Screened Soil this is kept in a barn meaning you can order dry top dressing whatever the weather.
